Hockey's Christmas Classic

A Journey into Hockey

It’s Christmas time and traditions abound. From Bing Crosby and White Christmas and Miracle on 34th Street to Egg Nog and Mistletoe.

In our hockey neighborhood, we recall the Season’s Greetings sign that used by placed on the Maple Leaf Gardens ice this time of year.

Then there is the hockey song of the season – Honky the Christmas Goose.

Sung by Johnny Bower, his son and some other children (said to be son’s friends), it was released in 1965 mostly in Ontario and it became a big hit, mostly due to Bower’s popularity with the Leafs, who’d won 3 Stanley Cups in the 4 years prior.

Half a century later, it recalled by those who were then young, and it is considered a legend.
