A Look Back in Time Through A Picture of a Hackensack Business, circa 1945
Journeys into Hackensack
Christmas may be behind us, but those seeking to retain the spirit of the season just a little longer may want to get a look at a recent lovely piece in northjersey.com.
The initial appeal was the picture, dated December 15, 1945 of a Christmas party in Hackensack for employees of the Goldberg Slipper Company.
It’s a picture that says a lot in its own right. Yet, it is merely the point of departure in a wonderful perspective piece called “Remembering Goldberg’s and bygone post-war North Jersey”.
Its author is Michael J. Birkner, a professor of history at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. He grew up locally and his mother worked at Goldberg’s.
It is an informative, insightful and moving account of what it was once important to many locally, but is now but a memory to a very few. Worth a look.
A happy and healthy new year to all.
