A Hackensack song from the 1920’s
Journeys into Hackensack
Musically speaking Hackensack is probably best known from its connection to a Billy Joel tune.
The Fountains of Wayne also had a popular song named Hackensack.
But back almost 100 years ago there was a novelty song with Hackensack in its title that garnered attention.
The song was written by Dan A. Russo and Art. L. Beiner. According to NJArts, who chronicled top New Jersey songs, there was not much to find on them. So it is unclear whether the song was based on any real connection to our Hackensack. Or maybe as NJ Arts mused ” ….they just came across the city name in an encyclopedia, and decided to try to work it into a song”.
Another interesting note: The song was later reworked as “My Little Grass Shack in Kealakekua, Hawaii.” To listen to that, look under the video of the original Hackensack version, below:
