How to Recover When Life Crushes You - Healing Emotional Pain

It can be overwhelming not knowing the way. Life provides suffering, Healing requires help. It is what you do along the way that matters.

Depending on what stage we are at in our lives, we can sometimes feel like we ought to know more about who we are, or how to live. We may criticize ourselves for making the same mistakes, or for just not "getting it," whatever "it" may be.

We ask how our lives would be if only we had "known better." During these moments it’s important to remember that none of us are born with an instruction manual and that learning lessons is a lifelong journey.

We are born to observe, learn, and grow

There is a built-in guarantee that there will be mistakes along the way. It is only natural that we may sometimes become overwhelmed, especially when the lessons keep coming and it is important to remember that learning to understand yourself and your world, is an ongoing and active process where the journey is more important than the destination.

Feeling Overwhelmed

So how do we recover when we feel utterly crushed by life? When our heart literally aches with every beat?

Whether you saw it coming or not, the feeling is the same: you’re devastated. You gasp at your vulnerability and wonder, “Why did this happen?”

Life dishes up so many hardships: heartbreak, illness, injury, death, abandonment. Every hurt is personal. Every lesson is intended so you can become more of who you are. As you grow through this self-discovery, you begin to create your own instruction manual. The "how" and "why" is yours to discover, and part of the beauty of being alive is that these rules are always changing.

As a Life Coach, I’ve sat with many wounded people. I witness their pain and do my best to make space for it. Even when they cry out, “Why did this happen?” I try not to engage in reactive comforting. Advice or quick answers always feel redundant, when someone is deeply hurt.

Suffering as a Teacher

I too have suffered, had lots of growing pains, and many heartbrakes. I have cried on the street, in my office, sometimes with friends and family. I tried to dodge heartache but, like everyone, it eventually found me. It’s one of life’s crushing certainties.

Growing pains

After nearly 30 years practicing self development, this is what I’ve learned:

When you’re viciously knocked down by life, don’t get right back up. Like tripping and falling, you have the impulse to rise and start moving again. But ignoring a serious injury will make it worse. Pain demands attention, it needs to be acknowledged and embraced before you can move on.

We always know as much as we're meant to know at that moment and growing into our fullness is a process that unfolds in divine timing. You and your life are beautiful works in progress.
