How To Enjoy Redecorating Your Home As A Couple

Redecorating can be hard and stressful but here are some tips on how you can do it as a couple.

Moving in together as a couple is one of the most wonderful things you can do. Whether one of you moves in or you both move to somewhere new together, there is a joy and comfort that comes from living in the same space as your partner. Living together does present a unique challenge, however; redecorating as a couple. Redecorating can be hard and stressful enough with one person, but when you have two people who want two different things it could put a lot of strain on a relationship. Here’s how to enjoy redecorating your home as a couple.

Plan Out Your Favourite Things

Everyone has something that they absolutely want to have in their house; whether it’s a particular kind of room or a particular piece of furniture. The first step is to identify these essentials and talk about them and plan around them. Do you have a favourite couch or want to set aside room for a study? Make sure that your partner knows this. Lots of guys dream of having a game room. Maybe your partner wants one and you don’t know. Or maybe they don’t want one at all, but they’d be willing to discuss it with you and come up with a solution.

Being able to plan around these important things reduces the chances that they will become an issue later on down the line. No one knows your partner like you. You know what they want most, they know what you want most, and you can plan around that. The more planning you can do the better. That rule applies to everything in life and not just redecorating. Fail to plan and you plan to fail.

Be Happy to Compromise

For everything that you consider essential, there will be many things that aren’t so important. Compromise is an important part of any relationship, and it applies to re-decorating too. If your partner wants something then you should consider letting them have it. The more you compromise with them, the more they will compromise with you too. Make trade-offs with each other; such as having a study for your work that your partner can use as a reading room too.

Things will move much smoother when redecorating if you are willing to make compromises and let go of petty things. Ask yourself if something is really as important as you think it is. It might be more important to your partner. Take a look at both sides of things and work it all out together as a couple. There’s bound to be an answer if you compromise and work together. So sit down and discuss things like the mature adults you are. Compromise benefits all involved.

Highlight Memories

One of the joys of redecorating is being able to highlight memories and create a home that reflects your time together as a couple. Are there any particular photographs that you want to display? Do it. Hang them up and put them on shelves and give yourself a gentle reminder of the wonderful time you have spent together. How about something special that you picked up while vacationing together?

As you redecorate your home you’ll likely find all of these mementoes. Make them a focal point of the redecoration and live somewhere that reflects you, your partner, and the life you have shared. You can choose to highlight anything you want that has value to you. The classics are wedding photos of course, but what about the ticket to the first movie you watched together? Or the ticket stub to the first game you watched together? If you’ve collected things like that, then make a collage and hang it up.

Choose New Furniture

Getting new furniture is something that should be a part of every redecoration effort. Get rid of the old and bring in the new. Take a look through some furniture catalogues and do a quick search for flat pack assembly costs to find some great furniture for your new home together. You can assemble the furniture yourself or find someone to put it together for you, by searching for furniture assembly costs, if you’d rather do without the hassle. Compromising and choosing furniture together ties in with highlighting memories too. Maybe you need to get a bigger sofa because you have a new baby on the way and your family is growing. It’s a little thing that goes a long way. Getting new furniture breathes new life into your home and is a great way to get started with making new memories together.

One reason that we choose to redecorate is to get a fresh start. You can’t do that if you don’t replace at least some of your furniture. You don’t need to replace everything of course, but you should get a few things for the new (old) place. See what great obligations you can find for your home.

Redecorating can be stressful, but there are ways to make the process smoother and simpler. Plan ahead for things that you want to have/keep, be willing to compromise on others, and make the new look reflect the life that you’ve led so far. Make something that is more than a home; make it a reflection of the two of you as a couple.
