How can a Naturopathic Doctor prepare a client for surgery?

When dealing with pre-planned surgeries, it is optimal for patients to see their Naturopathic Doctor ahead of time to receive some pre-operative care instructions. Typically, there is an assessment completed and a Naturopathic Doctor looks to see if there is a way of boosting health, reducing the recovery time, and increases the success rate of surgery. This can be accomplished via general counselling (around any anxieties and fears about upcoming surgery), dietary counselling, and additional supplements that may seem appropriate (to boost the natural healing process).

Why stop supplements before/during and/or after a procedure?

This general advice is typically given out of concern for the patients' safety. We would like the process and outcomes of each procedure to be as predictable as possible even though each patient responds differently to every intervention. By asking patients to avoid taking certain supplements before/during and/or after a procedure, we can better control the different variables of each procedure. Otherwise, there can be different interactions that can throw off how the body responds to the procedure itself or the medications used during the procedure, especially to anesthetics.

What natural procedures facilitate faster recovery?

There are several natural procedures that can facilitate faster recovery and they can vary. For example, gall-bladder removal surgery requires different support than an ACL repair surgery. Generally, the recommendation of homeopathic remedies like Arnica Montana, and other remedies specific to the location of surgery, can be very helpful. In addition, a healthy anti-inflammatory diet can speed up recovery along with vitamins and minerals that are essential to healing like Vitamin C, zinc, and copper. Lastly, acupuncture is also a safe intervention that can facilitate faster recovery.

What are suggested follow-up services?

As Naturopathic Doctors, we try to match the timing of our follow-ups with that of the surgeon or physician who performed the procedure. First and foremost, we follow post-operative instructions for the services that the patient can receive. We also try to schedule a phone-call or check-in within the first week following the procedure to assess the need for an earlier follow-up or support with any complications from the procedure. We also help coordinate care and referral to other practitioners such as physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, etc. by discussing these options with the patient and encouraging them to consult with their family doctors about these services.
