Diabetes And You

Diabetes And You

Diabetes affects around 4 million Canadians, and while there is no cure for type 1 diabetes, both types can be dealt with through nutrition, exercise, and rest.

Diabetes comes in two varieties:

Type 1, caused by the immune system attacking the insulin producing cells in the pancreas, which causes glucose levels to rise,  and Type 2, where your body still produces insulin but not enough.

There is no cure for Type 1 Diabetes, but Type 2 can be cured with a change of diet and exercise. The same principals can be applied to both to help improve your quality of life.

  • Have something on hand to help if your blood sugar drops, like a tablespoon of honey or half a cup of juice. In a pinch, a tablespoon of sugar can help.
  • Eat foods rich in Zinc, Chromium, & Selenium. This can help your body respond better to insulin. Taking supplements can help augment your current diet.
  • Diets often call for you to skip the carbs, but this couldn't be further from the truth. Try to eat whole grains over refined ones. Carbohydrates provide essential energy and are good for regulating levels of insulin.
  • Do not have too much fibre. This can interfere with the way essential minerals like Zinc are absorbed in your body.

Get Moving!

  • Go for a walk! Getting your heart pumping and the blood flowing is very good for your body. A complete body work out can help balance your internal systems, and regulate your insulin levels.
  • Join a yoga class. Yoga can be an excellent option for a low stress, but very effective workout.

Symptoms of Diabetes

Get Some Shuteye!

  • Insulin function can be affected by your sleep (or lack thereof), so getting proper rest is essential. Try creating a sleep plan to help get into a routine that works for you!
  • A fixed bedtime really helps, and creating a routine prepares your body to perform more efficiently.
  • Avoid sugary foods after 4pm. In addition to helping regulate your insulin levels, avoiding sugary foods before bed will make your body work less overnight, providing a better sleep.

Trying these things will go a long way to help improve your quality of life, and in the case of Type 2 diabetes help to reverse some of the effects.
