One of the most commonly used flooring options for this niche is epoxy flooring. This choice revolves around the fact that epoxy flooring is extremely durable, requires minimal maintenance, and is environmentally friendly. The term epoxy refers to a form of catalytic plastic. It is a resin and it is usually a compound of bisphenol A and a polyamine. Epoxy resin was discovered by Dr. Pierre Custom, a Swiss scientist in the 1930s. Typically, polyamines are used to harden surfaces or floors. A catalytic reaction occurs when resin and hardener come in contact with each other. They bind to each other and form a chemical crosslink that is high in energy. Because of this binding technology, epoxies can be recovered in a short time.
There are three main types of epoxy flooring. These are 100% solid epoxy, solvent-based, and water-based epoxy. Of the three, 100% solid epoxy is the best choice because it performs the best Water and solvent-based epoxies are considered user-friendly, but these types of epoxies are less durable and cannot be applied as a dense coating like 100% solids. Solid epoxy efficiently meets all the stringent requirements that must be adhered to when designing an industrial floor. It provides strong adhesion, excellent chemical resistance, and toughness. Furthermore, epoxy floors in general are abrasion resistant, waterproof, heat resistant, and resistant to corrosive action such as acids and alkalis. In the dry state, they are non-toxic and therefore, can be used safely even in residential projects and children's play areas.
The practical application of a floor surface takes the following steps. The compounds are mixed in the right proportions and applied to the floor at a minimum depth of 2 mm. Typically, epoxy flooring requires at least seven coats to create a glossy and finished surface in the end. This includes a base coat, one or two epoxy coats, a broadcast coat of colored sand or flax, and a topcoat.
The main advantage of epoxy flooring is the ease of maintenance. Concrete floors require proper protection and an epoxy floor is the best choice for protection from abrasion, chemical attack, and thermal shock, which is usually experienced in industrial installations. With the advent of technology, more innovation is expected and it is only a matter of time before epoxy flooring solutions find widespread application in the residential sector.
