Noah Hawley took the production set from Minnesota and travelled to Kansas City in the hope of giving the season a fresh look. And to be honest, it does give a breath of freshness to the overly used snowy roads and dark woods set up.
What is also new to Season 4 apart from the presence of Chris Rock is that the story is being told from the 1950s timeline. So, in the show, we see Hawley’s imagination of mid-century Kansas City.
The premise of the story revolves around the battle of wits played for the control of streets between the mafia and a group of street-smart African Americans. Chris Rock plays the character Loy Cannon who is the head of the African American’s gang. Cannon is a serene gentleman who uses violence only when provoked. He exposits that in one of the scenes where he says he is more into expanding his business and saving the life of his family members instead of shedding blood but if the other person starts killing his children, he will not hold back.
Don Fadda’s son Josto’s dislike for Loy Cannon is seen from the start. He sees Cannon and his gang’s challenge as an insult to the “natural order of things.”
“We’re the goddamn Roman Empire; they were born in huts.” Josto had said in episode 1.
The shining star of the show has been Rosetta Mayflower played splendidly by Chernobyl actress Jessie Buckley.
Mayflower is multilingual, oddly-mannered, and has a very strange accent. Fans have hailed Noah Hawley’s attempt to establish Mayflower as a tribute to the original film’s character Marge Gunderson which won Frances McDormand her first Oscar in 1997.
Mayflower is an eye-catching illumination on the show, and though it feels like she is a side character, by the time episode 1 concludes, you would understand that she is a central figure and has a big part to play.
Jessie Buckley has been a part of some high-quality shows in the recent past such as HBO’s disaster epic “Chernobyl,” “Beast,” and “Wild Rose” but as far as her acting is concerned, this is her career-defining performance.
Despite the fact she is surrounded by the hoards of talent which includes Ben Whishaw of “A Good English Scandal” fame, Timothy Olyphant ( Hitman), and Chris Rock, she has given a performance so outstanding that people are looking up for her name on the internet.
Season 4 does take its time to introduce all the characters, but from Episode 2 onwards, the plot does pick up some pace as things begin to come out clear. As it happens with all multi-character story, the audience might get confused and overwhelmed seeing all these men walking around Kansas City, but Hawley is here to help as he gives on-screen titles to the characters which will presumably be the key figures in the climax.
