Ethylene glycol is a colourless, odourless, and sweet-tasting organic compound. It is a highly poisonous and slightly viscous liquid that has a boiling point of 198°C. It is mainly used as an antifreeze as well as a raw material in the production of polyesters, such as polyethylene terephthalate. It is extensively used as a medium for convective heat transfer, for example, in areas like automobiles and liquid cooled computers. It is a very successful compound used in chilled-water air-conditioning and geothermal heating/cooling systems. Ethylene glycol can gain energy from sources like ocean, lake, and water well.

Over the last decade, the ethylene glycol capacities have started up in cost-advantaged regions, which include the Middle Eastern nations and Northeast Asia, thereby increasing the demand for the chemical. In the Middle East, the abundance of ethane has provided a significant cost advantage for regional ethylene and ethylene derivative manufacturers, creating the foundation for the most competitive ethylene glycol production in the world. In economies such as India and Japan, there have been an increase in the demand for air-conditioners, heaters, liquid cooled computers, and coolers, and this has influenced the market growth of ethylene glycol. In China, the restrictions imposed amidst the Coronavirus outbreak caused a slump of around 10% in the ethylene glycol market in the month of February. However, with the loosening of the lockdown restrictions, the market has shown signs of revival. These factors are expected to influence the production cost of ethylene glycol.

The production cost report by Procurement Resource assesses the production of ethylene glycol via the hydrolysis of ethylene oxide. In this process, ethylene oxide is first generated by the oxidation of ethylene in the presence of oxygen and silver oxide catalyst. The ethylene oxide hydrolysis with water under stress produces an ethylene glycol combination, which is harsh in texture. The water-glycol solution, hence produced, is supplied to the evaporators to recover and recycle the water. The monoethylene glycol and trethylene glycol are then separated by fractional distillation in a vacuum to produce ethylene glycol.
