As I walk through the doors I'm greeted with a calming foyer, which is good, because I'm a bit nervous about my first ever Osteopathy appointment. My massage therapist recommended Osteopathy after we realized something a little off in my lower back was deeper than muscle tissue. Could have been from the 10 hours of driving I did a couple weeks ago, could have been that time I fell asleep on the couch, but I'd had discomfort sitting for a while now and had been putting off scheduling the appointment. The Belmont Osteopathy Clinic came highly recommended so I snagged a last minute appointment opening when one came up on their Facebook page.
I took my shoes off and quickly filled out the new patient intake forms that were available on the side table as I entered. My appointment was with Sheelagh Stewart, DOMP, Manual Osteopathic Practitioner. Sheelagh came out to get me right on time for my appointment and after being admitted into the suite we quickly reviewed my health history and talked about my current issue. Within a couple minutes, Sheelagh had already started work on me. Similar to massage therapy I figured the best way to see what's going on was for Sheelagh to get her hands on the problem.
The room was very comfortable, quite warm and my procedure did not require me to take any clothing off other than to remove my leather belt as it was in the area Sheelagh was working on. I was standing for part of my procedure but was eventually asked to lay on the table which was similar to that I'd been on for massage therapy. I was amazed at how subtle the movement was as she made adjustments, but I sure could feel it. There was never any pain but it was very interesting to feel my skeletal structure be put into alignment.
Sheelagh taught me how all of our alignment comes from our pelvis, both down to our toes and from pelvis up through spine and that an old sports injury on my one side has caused me to be slightly out of alignment. She did some very subtle general work on my spine and ribs which felt great and recommended I take it easy for the next 24 hours while everything settled. She also recommended I return to continue working on my alignment and I certainly will be setting up another appointment in a month!
