In today's world, many women wait until they are in their 40's to start a family. Some women are in perimenopause while also becoming pregnant.

With all the hormonal changes and additional weight gain during pregnancy, approximately 50% of women can experience back, hip, and pelvic pain. A pelvic health physiotherapist (PHT) can help address this pain through fitness plans that address strength, flexibility, alignment, and posture. They can help women have a fit vagina (pelvic floor), stay strong in pregnancy, prepare them for birth, and heal common postpartum core challenges like incontinence, prolapse and diastasis recti.  Personal trainers who have training such as the Core Confidence Specialist Certification are also qualified to help pregnant women and people prepare for and recover from pregnancy and birth.

Along with staying strong through pregnancy with exercise, a pelvic health physiotherapist and/or trainer can teach a woman ways to move to reduce day to day stress on the body. Normal life can be a busy one for women working during pregnancy and it may require some lifting or bending. Even cleaning and grocery shopping for the family can be stressful. Are there other small children in the family that want to be picked up and carried? A core confidence specialist can show you ways to do this that are more efficient and easier on your pelvic floor while pregnant.

Delivery Day

Bringing a new life into this world is an experience like no other and you want to be prepared. A Pelvic health physiotherapist and/or core confidence specialist can help you strengthen your pelvic floor, back, abs, and hips, which will help with both the delivery and recovery. They can even recommend optimal positions for labor and delivery.

Postpartum Physical Therapy benefits:

  • Pain - 30% of moms who have pelvic pain during pregnancy continue to have pelvic pain after birth. Moms will learn how to move, adapt movement when necessary, and gain strength and suppleness in their pelvic floor.
  • Regaining Form and Function- A physical therapist can assist women in retraining the core and pelvic floor postpartum to ensure a return to optimal form and function.
  • Breastfeeding - Some physical therapists are trained to address concerns such as clogged ducts (stasis), and inflammation.
  • Diastasis Recti – (a separation of the 2 rectus abdominis (6pack) muscles from the midline) Physical therapists can help by working on core strength to heal the abdominal wall.
  • Pelvic Health – By educating on how to increase blood flow to the pelvis, physical therapists can help women recover from postpartum pelvic health issues, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, and more. They do this by educating you on how to use your pelvic floor muscles properly and how strengthen the muscles.
  • Incontinence - For women with urinary incontinence postpartum, PTs help the work on reconnecting the relationship between their brain and pelvic muscles and bring back use of the muscle through squats, lunges, and other functional activities.
