Fear cold and flu season no more

But fear no more, be proactive and prepared this season with a few tips and tricks that will help you and your family get through with minimal damage.

So the kids are back in school, people are back from holidays, it’s time to hunker down and get ready for the inevitable cold and flu season that is upon us. Most people dread this time of year, the coughing and sneezing, the aches and pains, fevers and chills.

But fear no more, be proactive and prepared this season with a few tips and tricks that will help you and your family get through with minimal damage.

There are many foods, nutrients, herbs and things we can do to help boost our immune system and get it into tip top shape for this Fall season. We all get into certain situations where we put our immune system in jeopardy; like travelling, battling allergies, exposing ourselves to chemicals in our diets and from the environment, emotional and physical stress, lack of sleep and obviously being exposed to infections directly. So our first defense is to avoid these situations, and how do we do that?

  • Start by eating healthy, nutritious and chemical free foods.
  • Decrease stress by adding activities such as yoga or meditation, reading, journaling or just taking a bath.
  • Make sure to get 8 hours of sleep.
  • Stay away from those you know are battling an infection.

Having said all that it can be easier said than done, so if you can’t avoid it, let’s look at how we can boost our immune system to fight these creepy crawlers.

Here are some things we can do that will help support our immune system:

Make sure your GI tract is running smoothly - by eating fermented food such as sauerkraut, kimchi and kombucha, or take a probiotic to help increase the good flora and knock out the bad

Keep moving - exercise will keep you healthy, energetic and help decrease your stress

Drink warm lemon water first thing in the morning - to help detox your system and boost vitamin C

Drink lots of water - staying hydrated puts less stress on your body

Do a Reboot/Cleanse - help flush out all of the toxins, so your body is able to fight anything new that may be introduced

R & R - make sure you get sufficient sleep to let your immune system fight the good fight

Just breathe - deep breaths allow for oxygenation and relaxation

Get outside - getting a daily dose of vitamin D, helps boost your immune system 3-5 times

♥  Laugh and stay positive - this is my favourite, a healthy mental outlook, in my opinion goes a long way to support your immune system

We can also look at some foods, vitamins and herbs that will help keep you feeling strong all season long:

Vitamins - we’ve all heard of vitamin C and the newest immune booster, zinc, but did you also know about vitamin B12, D, E, and selenium? They can all help increase your bodies ability to battle those dreaded cold and flus.

Some common foods that will help combat the flu are: garlic, a natural antibiotic; manuka honey, with its anti fungal and antibacterial properties; ginger, an anti-inflammatory; chili pepper, a circulatory stimulant and natural anti-biotic; apple cider vinegar, an anti fungal and antibacterial.

♥ Lastly, I mention some great herbs and spices you should have stocked in your kitchen this fall: cinnamon, a warming agent that helps reduce chills, aches and pains and a natural antibiotic; echinacea, helps increase your white blood cells (aka “fighter cells); cayenne, anti fungal, anti cold and flu; and oregano, one of my favourites with its antiviral, anti fungal, anti inflammatory, anti allergen properties...just to name a few.

There are others out there, and I could write a book on all of Mother Nature’s natural remedies, but I’ll just keep this short, sweet and simple.

Eating well is always a good idea, but especially when your body is working hard to fight off any bug.

Now none of this is a guarantee that you won’t come down with a virus or bug of some fashion, but in my opinion it will certainly help decrease your symptoms and the duration of whatever may get to you.

This season I was surrounded by colds, coughs, and flus at work and at home and I knew I couldn't avoid it, so when I felt that dreaded tickle in my nose I knew it was time to step up my immune boosting game. I up'ed my Vitamin C, and all my vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients actually. I began juicing an drinking my flu-fighting elixir (see below), I also kept exercising and one thing that is always key to my cold battling success, I used my netipot like crazy!

I am happy to say that while the cold seemed to last on average about 2 weeks for most surrounding me, my cold literally lasted for 48 hours. I had congestion and a headache that started on a Monday morning, but by Tuesday night, it had completely cleared up and was gone by Wednesday.

My husband and co-workers were amazed at how fast they watched me go from ill to chill. Was it a coincidence that I got the short-lived cold, not a chance, my body was prepped and ready to fight and man did it win the battle fast!

Don’t dread the Fall, get outside, talk and walk and enjoy all that this wonderfully colourful and beautiful season has to offer!

"Just take a shot of what ever's in the liquor cupboard when you feel that tickle in the back of your throat and it cures all!"

Being prepared and prepped doesn't mean you won't get a cold or the flu, but knowing what to do when it comes will definitely help shorten your down time.
