4 Benefits of Duct Cleaning in Northern Utah

Duct cleaning can help reduce the effects of allergies. With spring coming up, various homes around Northern Utah might benefit from that.

Duct Cleaning Helps With These Problems

Duct cleaning is one of those things that most people don’t think about because it’s not needed on a super regular basis. The EPA is hesitant to officially say that duct cleaning does that much. As far as health goes, they state that it shows no evidence of doing anything to prevent health issues. This much is true, I don’t want to oversell the benefits of it. However, there are benefits that we can see that impact health and quality of life. It won’t prevent health problems, but it can reduce the symptoms. It also has other benefits as well. Northern Utah is known for dust and allergens in the air, so duct cleaning is something you should be considering.

1. Allergy Reduction

While duct cleaning won’t stop you from having allergies, even the EPA acknowledges that allergens can contaminate heating and cooling systems if they aren’t properly installed or maintained. If this happens, your system will end up pumping allergens throughout your home, making them worse. The EPA will recommend duct cleaning if you suffer severe or worsening allergy symptoms. They also recommend it for mold infestations when spotted.

2. Better Sleep

Allergies create all kinds of problems. The most commonly associated problem of allergies is respiratory issues, like asthma. It can also cause inflammation, leading to a closed off respiratory tract. Then there are skin conditions, like rashes and hives. All of these are unpleasant on their own, but it gets worse in how they affect your sleep. I myself have experienced many nights where I couldn’t fall asleep, or repeatedly woke up during the night because I was having breathing troubles. Lack of sleep has other impacts on your health, making you irritable, inattentive, and generally miserable. Anything that helps reduce the impact allergies will have on your sleep will help you enjoy your day more.

3. Reduce Energy Consumption

Cleaning your air ducts is about more than just reducing allergies. Your air ducts are a part of your HVAC system. When they get choked with dust, it impedes air flow and messes with the function of the entire system. This means your system needs to run longer to get the same effect. This means you end up using more energy to keep your house warm in the winter and cool in the summer. If you aren’t concerned with the ecological ramifications of excessive energy use, consider the increase to your energy bill. Saving money on your heating and cooling is always a bonus.

4. Make Your HVAC Last Longer

Cleaning your air ducts saves you money in another way. All machines suffer wear and tear the more you use them. Simple friction damages the moving parts. Your HVAC is no exception. The more you use it, the more damage it will take over time. Furthermore, as dust builds up in your HVAC, it can coat the parts, creating even more friction. Cleaning your ducts and HVAC system reduces the amount you have to use them, and reduces the overall friction when you do use it. This reduces the wear and tear on the system. It will last longer, so you won’t have to replace or repair your HVAC as often. That’s a money saver right there!

The End of the World As We Know It

Again, I don’t want to oversell this. The EPA hasn’t found any evidence that air duct cleaning will prevent disease, only that it can reduce symptoms of some problems. Forgetting to clean your air ducts isn’t going to cause significant harm to your health unless mold has taken root in them.

There are two major exceptions.  One is mold, which the EPA insists requires cleaning when you see signs.  The other is cleaning drier vents, which we've seen several times. Not cleaning your drier vents regularly can create a fire hazard.  We are also able to do this for you as one of our core services.

Duct Cleaning Has Benefits

That said, it’s not a non-issue. Because the effects are so slow to build up and the chore so spaced out, it’s one we easily forget about. Most clients that I talk to say they don’t ever remember having their ducts cleaned at all. This can lead to a lot of mess building up.

It also means we frequently find that the air ducts were, as the EPA puts it, compromised. We find things like animal nests, fiberglass insulation, and even, on one occasion, human feces (don’t want to even think about that one). Air duct cleaning services don’t just remove the dust and allergens, but help us find damage to your air ducts. It’s an important part of the proper maintenance of your air ducts that you shouldn’t neglect. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us. We’ll happily chat over the phone about your situation at no charge. We’ll give you the best advice we can for your situation, even if that advice says you don’t need us just yet and can get better results through a less expensive method.
